The sports and outdoor equipment sector demands materials that combine extreme durability, flexibility across a wide temperature range, UV and weathering resistance, and in many cases, body-contact safety and low extractable content. Silicone materials appear throughout this sector — in waterproof and breathable textile coatings, equipment grips and handles, protective sealants for outdoor gear, and footwear components — addressing specific performance gaps that neither organic polymers nor conventional elastomers fill as effectively.
Market segments driving silicone adoption: technical sportswear (ski, mountaineering, cycling), water sports equipment (kayaks, drysuits, wetsuits), footwear (running, hiking, trail), outdoor power equipment (snow blowers, chainsaws), and recreational infrastructure (climbing walls, water park surfaces).
Water-Repellent Coatings for Technical Sportswear
Durable water repellency (DWR) in performance textiles has traditionally relied on C8 or C6 fluorocarbon chemistry (PFAS). Regulatory pressure (REACH, EPA, Bluesign) is driving conversion to silicone-based DWR alternatives, which offer:
- Water-contact angles >120° on treated fabrics
- Absence of persistent organic pollutant concerns
- Soft hand feel (vs stiff, papery finish from some fluorocarbon treatments)
- Compatibility with stretch fabrics (silicone elasticity vs brittleness of fluorocarbon under flex)
ZEMSIL silicone products for textile DWR:
SE-DM (PDMS emulsion): applied by pad-dry-cure process at 100–160 °C. Creates a hydrophobic silicone film on fiber surfaces. Provides soft hand and initial water repellency; durability under repeated washing is moderate (10–20 wash cycles), adequate for seasonal sportswear.
AM series (amino-functional silicone): amino groups form ionic bonds with textile fibers (particularly cotton, wool, nylon), providing better wash durability than non-reactive PDMS. AM-amino silicone also imparts a characteristic "silky smooth" handle that is valued in high-end sportswear liners and compression garments.
SE-DM-50F (fluorosilicone emulsion): combines silicone's flexibility with partial oil repellency from fluorosilicone component — useful for cycling and motorsport garments requiring both water and light oil (chain lube, sunscreen) repellency.
Silicone DWR application does not impair breathability (MVTR, moisture vapor transmission rate) of membrane-laminate constructions (Gore-Tex and equivalents). This is a key advantage over heavy waterproof coatings that block membrane pores.
Equipment Grips and Vibration Damping
Handles and grips on bicycles, ski poles, tennis rackets, power tools, and trekking poles must provide secure hold under wet and cold conditions, absorb vibration, and withstand UV exposure over multi-season use. Silicone rubber (SB-HTV or SB-LSR) offers:
- Coefficient of friction stable from -30 °C to +60 °C (organic rubber becomes hard and slippery below -10 °C)
- Shore A hardness tunable from 15 (very soft, maximum vibration absorption) to 60 (structural grips)
- UV resistance: silicone retains appearance and properties after >2000 hours QUV accelerated weathering (organic rubber grips crack or chalk)
- Color stability: silicone can be pigmented to stable colors using inorganic pigments
Vibration damping: golf grip inserts, road bike bar tape backings, and climbing hold surface coatings use silicone rubber's high damping capacity (loss tangent tan δ at 10 Hz higher than most organic rubbers at ambient temperature) to reduce transmitted vibration.
Overmolded grips: SB-LSR liquid silicone rubber enables overmolding onto polypropylene, nylon, and aluminum cores in a single injection cycle. The process bonds silicone directly to the substrate (with appropriate adhesion promoter such as CS-550 primer) without secondary assembly.
Outdoor Gear Sealants
Seam sealing for waterproof tents, drysuits, rain jackets, and inflatable paddle sports equipment uses flexible adhesive/sealant systems that must:
- Remain flexible at -30 °C and not creep at +60 °C in direct sunlight
- Bond to a variety of substrates (nylon ripstop, TPU-coated nylon, hypalon, silicone-coated fabric)
- Resist UV, ozone, and organic solvents from sunscreen and insect repellent
ZEMSIL SS-N (neutral-cure one-component silicone) and SB-RTV2 (two-component) cover general outdoor gear sealing. Silicone-coated fabrics (commonly used for ultralight tents and tarps — "silnylon") require silicone-compatible adhesives: standard polyurethane or neoprene contact cements fail on silicone-coated surfaces. SB-RTV2 mixed sealant dissolved in solvent (VM&P naphtha or heptane, ~10% by weight) is the standard field-repair adhesive for silicone-coated outdoor textiles.
Climbing equipment: UIAA and CE certification for climbing holds includes color durability and grip surface maintenance. Silicone-modified polyurethane topcoats and silicone rubber surface layers on polyurethane climbing holds improve grip consistency in humid conditions.
Footwear Applications
In performance footwear, silicone materials appear in:
Outsole compounds: injection-molded or compression-molded HTV silicone outsoles for water sports sandals, sauna shoes, and hospital footwear where grip in wet conditions and chemical resistance (chlorinated pool water, cleaning agents) are required. Fumed silica (FS-200) loading at 35–45 phr provides the combination of wet-grip performance and abrasion resistance in silicone outsoles.
Waterproof sealing: silicone sealants applied at boot-upper-to-sole seams in waterproof hiking boots — particularly where the upper material is silicone-coated or TPU-coated fabric. SS-N provides permanent flexible bonding with >300% elongation.
Textile treatment on insoles and liners: AM amino-silicone applied to knitted insole textiles improves moisture management perception (though silicone itself is hydrophobic — the effect is through fiber surface lubricity reducing friction and irritation).
